About This Place

Nestled just off the beaten path on 2811 Cerrillos Rd in Santa Fe, Café Castro is a cherished gem for lovers of authentic New Mexican cuisine. This vibrant restaurant delivers a warm, family-style dining experience deeply rooted in local tradition, making you feel as if you’ve been invited into someone's home for a hearty, soul-satisfying meal.

The menu at Café Castro is a rich celebration of the flavors that define Northern New Mexico. It’s impossible to recommend just one dish here, but a must-try is their Triple Enchilada Plate, a generous mountain of perfectly rolled enchiladas filled with your choice of cheese, chicken, or ground beef. This plate comes with soul-warming sides like rice, refried beans, posole, and a crisp, fresh salad. Customers rave about the deep, complex character of their red chile sauce, which is unforgettable and made in-house, a flavor so authentic that many, like Elizabeth Foley, have taken pints home to savor long after their visit.

For those seeking hearty, traditional comfort food, dishes such as the Bowl of Menudo and the Carne Adovada Burrito are standouts. The Menudo is artfully garnished with onions and oregano, offering a warm and aromatic experience that's perfect on a crisp Santa Fe evening. The stuffed sopaipillas are another local favorite, praised as the stuff of dreams by patrons like Devon Salazar, delivering that perfect balance of soft bread with a flavorful, savory filling inside.

Enjoy mouthwatering shareable options like a dozen freshly made sopaipillas or tamales smothered in your choice of chile — red, green, or the festive “Xmas” blend. The vegetarian menu also shines, with dishes like vegan tamales that appeal to plant-based diners without sacrificing the bold, spicy flavors that are a hallmark of the region.

The dining atmosphere at Café Castro effortlessly blends cozy and welcoming, with attentive service that makes each guest feel treasured. Reviewers highlight not just the remarkable food but also the genuine hospitality — as Robert Ramirez notes, the “top notch” service and fair pricing make it a repeat destination when in Santa Fe. It's a place where locals gather away from the touristy plaza, creating a truly authentic and laid-back vibe.

Whether you’re sipping on a refreshing sangria or margarita alongside your meal, or warming up with a robust coffee, every detail at Café Castro is crafted to offer a comforting, flavorful dive into New Mexican cuisine. If you’re craving a true taste of Santa Fe with the warmth of home-cooked love, Café Castro promises an unforgettable experience that will have you returning time and time again.

I ordered an enchilada plate with ground beef, chips & salsa, a ground beef side taco, and a horchata agua fresca through DoorDash and everything was delicious! It took less than 30 minutes for my food to arrive from ordering so everything was still fresh. I also got some red chile sauce and green chiles on the side. The enchilada plate includes rice, refried beans, posole, and a small salad on the side. The ground beef in the enchilada was seasoned well and blends well with everything else in the plate. The taco had a hard shell topped with shredded lettuce and tomatoes and was quite flavorful. The chips were the typical kind you get from most Mexican restaurants though so no surprises there, but the salsa did have a nice little spicy kick to it. I've never had a horchata agua fresca before, but I was surprised how good it was! It had a milky vanilla cinnamon spice flavor and was smooth to drink with the rest of the meal. I will definitely try so more dishes on the menu and may update this review about them later. The photo doesn't show the chips & salsa.

Fantastic delicious authentic New Mexican food. Away from the plaza and definitely where the locals eat. I'm still dreaming about that stuffed sopaipilla!

What a find! We wanted Northern NM cuisine as we drove thru Santa Fe at lunch time. This restaurant feels more like you're being fed by friends and family than you're at a restaurant. On a Wed we enjoyed the blue corn enchilada special. $10.99 for a mountain of food including two enchiladas (with giant chunks of chicken), rice, beans, hominy, and a sopapilla. I took home leftovers though hubby subscribes to the clean plate club. Everyone was so warm and friendly. Definitely our new Santa Fe road stop!

We ordered the El Plato Grande with red chile and the Beef Fajitas. Both were absolutely delicious! The red chile is the best we've ever had, with a deep rich flavor. Red Chile is so good that we bought a pint to take home. They even offer gluten free red chile. Service is top notch and they all are just so welcoming and appreciative. We live in Albuquerque but will definitely come back when we're in Santa Fe. It's a nice, clean little restaurant.

This is the Taco Tuesday review Special : Five tacos Cost : $12.00 This restaurant is one of my go-to spots whenever I’m craving something delicious. The tacos are always tasty, filled with fresh cheese, lettuce, and tomato, and you can choose between chicken or beef. The size of the tacos is perfect—not the extra-large ones with flat bottoms, but a generous regular size that satisfies. And the best part? The price is unbelievable! You get great quality for a really reasonable cost. A standout feature is the sopapillas they serve alongside the tacos—they’re absolutely the best and really complete the meal. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, this place consistently delivers a satisfying and flavorful experience.
